Assistant Principal

  • Warm wishes and welcome to Union Pleasant Elementary School in the Hamburg Central School District and Hamburg community! We are excited to journey through the 2016-2017 school year with you, our partners in education. As we embark on this journey, I welcome you to ponder the notion that children learn to read and then read to learn. The power of reading is magnificent. Victor Hugo once said, "To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." As your journey with your child throughout the school year, help your child to stretch their imagination and learn about new or different things. Help to spark their imagination and ignite their passion for learning. A spark that continuously inspires me is to carve out time is a poster that promotes reading that states: "There is no app to replace your lap." Those words really stuck with me so I am sharing them with you. As you read to your child or your child reads to your or to him/herself, remember to track their reading towards the 25 book goal of the year.

You may be asking, so what’s with the bucket? The bucket is an icon or a metaphor that is inspired by the book Fill A Bucket by Carol McCloud & Katherine Martin. Here at UPES we strive to fill your bucket with good feelings, kindness, appreciation, safety, respect, and education daily. I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for partnering with us and sharing your children with us. I hope your bucket is full with excitement, love, and good feelings as you send your child(ren) off to school each and every day and that your child adds to it each night as they tell you about their day and share what they have learned.

Encouraging children to be a part of the ripple of kindness is layered into our culture at UPES. Recognition of positive all-star behavior individually and collectively through Bulldog Pride, recognition of character virtues, recognition of TERRIFIC kids, and support of various groups/clubs, is an integral part of our school community. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Character Cadets: One character cadet is nominated and recognized monthly from each class who exemplifies the character virtue set forth by the Character Council of WNY. In creating a culture of character, the following virtues will be focused on in the 2016-2017 school year: September - Truthfulness, October - Obedience, November - Gratefulness, December - Generosity, January - Orderliness, February - Forgiveness, March - Sincerity, April - Virtue, May - Honor, and June - Justice.

Safety Patrol: A team compromised of fifth grade students have pledged to: report to duty on time, perform duties faithfully, strive to prevent traffic casualties, always setting a good example, obey my teachers and officers of the patrol, report dangerous practices of students, and strive to earn the respect of fellow students. The Safety Patrol can be seen throughout the campus striving to ensure safety and promoting all-star behaviors.
