Is homework a daily battle in your home? You're not alone. The following tips will
help establish peace on the homefront and get the year off on the right foot.

    • Establish a routine. Consistency is key. Establish a routine and stick to it. Specify a place and time for daily homework.. Stay organized and keep work area free of clutter, noise and distractions such as radio and television. Be certain that paper, pencils and dictionaries are readily available.

    • Break homework into manageable chunks. Allow your child to work for 15 minutes and then provide a 3 minute break. Watch for signs of frustration in your child and provide breaks before frustration escalates.

    • Find out what works for your child. Some children find chewing gum or sucking on a lollipop helpful while working on homework.

    • BE AVAILABLE. Provide guidance not answers and don't allow your child to give up too easily. Emphasize the importance of homework. Communicate homework difficulties with your child's teacher so that support can be provided during the school day.
