Welcome to kindergarten! I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child this year. The following information will provide some of the details of our classroom.
Supplies: Your child will need a backpack to carry his or her lunch, folder, and books. Crayons, scissors, and glue sticks will be stored in each child’s supply box in his or her cubby. Pencils and markers will be shared and placed in a central location. Please remember to send your child’s “Take Home” folder to school each day and to check it each night for notes, permission slips, homework, etc. Anything you want me to see must be placed in the folder. Sneakers are recommended every day for comfort and safety and are required on Gym days. I will supply a large white T-shirt to be used as an art smock. I will contact you as we need to replenish supplies during the year.
Attendance is taken daily at 8:40 a.m. If your child is absent, please call Mrs. Ehlers, the school nurse, at 646-3373. Please send a written excuse when your child returns to school. Tardiness also requires a written excuse.
Morning Arrival: Children participating in the breakfast program may enter school at 8:20. All other children enter at 8:30. Students arriving by bus will be met by a teacher or aide and escorted to their classroom. Children who walk to school must enter through the main entrance, near the office. Kindergarten students will be met by a teacher or aide, who will walk them to their classroom. Please be aware that in order to ensure safety and security, our school has a sign-in policy. If you wish to drop off or pick up your child at the classroom, you must stop at the Main Office to sign in and get a visitor’s pass.
Dismissal: Bus students will be escorted to their buses each day. Walkers may be picked up at the main entrance at 2:20 p.m. If your child is to be picked up by someone different, or is to ride a different bus, please send a note to school. I am not able to release your child or make any changes without written permission.
Lunch: Our scheduled lunchtime is from 12:20-12:50. Children may buy lunch from the cafeteria for $1.75 daily, or prepay for the week if that is more convenient. Milk purchased without a lunch is 50 cents. Please send all lunch money in a labeled envelope or a Ziploc bag. Money in pockets gets lost easily.
Snack: Since we have a late lunch, we will have a snack break each day. Please send a healthy snack, such as fruit, vegetables, pretzels, or crackers and try to package the snacks so that your child can distinguish them from his or her lunch. I will always have extra snacks on hand for children who forget at any time.
Special Days: Each day one child will be recognized as “Friend of the Day”. That child will take care of all our jobs for that day, as well as enjoying special privileges. In addition, each child will have the chance to be our “Superstar of the Week” once during the course of the year.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please feel free to contact me at school (646-3370) or by e-mail (MMcWatters@hamburgschools.org). I’m looking forward to a wonderful year working with you and your child!
