Hamburg Central School DistrictPhysical Education Grading Explanation
Your child is graded in 4 areas – Fitness, Skill, Cooperation, & Effort.
Your child will receive a score based on the district rubric of
Distinguished (4), Proficient (3), Developing (2), and Beginning (1).
A grade of 3 is at grade level. This is the expected level of achievement.FITNESS: Evaluation of aerobic capacity, arm strength, flexibility, and muscular endurance.
(Results of the 4 item fitness test given twice a year.)
4 = Distinguished = Receives 4 * or 3 * and 1+ in all areas
3 = Proficient = Receives 1 I and combo of * and +
2 = Developing = Receives 2 I’s and combo of * and +
1 = Beginning = Receives more than 2 I’s and combo of * and +
SKILL: Evaluation of sports skills (ie. throwing, catching, striking, kicking).
4 = Distinguished = Proficiency exceeds grade level expectations in most skills
3 = Proficient = Proficiency consistent with grade level expectations in all skills
2 = Developing = Partial proficiency (below grade level in some areas)
1 = Beginning = Partial proficiency (below grade level in most areas)
COOPERATION: Evaluation of personal conduct in class. (i.e. following directions, cooperation)4 = Distinguished =Student consistently follows directions and shows respect to teacher and peers
3= Proficient = Student usually participates respectfully and with self-control
2= Developing = Student needs some reminders about following directions and being respectful1 = Beginning = Student needs reminders almost every class about following directions and working
EFFORT: Evaluation of effort and instances of being unprepared (no sneakers or no change of clothes)
4= Distinguished = 0 unprepareds for 20 weeks
3= Proficient = unprepared for Physical Education 1x in 20 wks.
2 = Developing = unprepared for Physical Education 2 x’s in 20 wks.
1 = Beginning = unprepared for Physical Education 3 or more x’s in 20 wks.
