"Understanding and Helping Your Child with Negative Behavior"
This 2 hour session is part of a series of after school training sessions that will be provided for parents each month at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus. The purpose of these sessions is to empower parents with the knowledge and skills they need to manage the common behavioral problems of their child. Sessions will cover a variety of areas pertaining to child behavior, and on-going parental feedback will be encouraged to ensure that this training is meeting their needs.
Session # 3: Using Visuals to Establish Routines
Course Description:
This session is ideal for parents of children with autism, non-verbal language disorder or parents of young children with organizing, planning or behavioral concerns. This session will allow parents to develop visual supports such as schedules, choice boards and other visual supports to support behavior change. Emphasis will also be on understanding the importance of visual supports, encouraging independent behavior and coordinating the use of visuals between home and school. Information from the child’s school as to which visual supports are in place at school will be obtained.

Reasons Behind the Behavior
This session is suited for parents of children who engage in various behaviors. The participants will learn the reasons why behaviors occur, identify the function of the behavior, and ways to change/replace the behavior.
