"Business Department of Year" for Hamburg
Hamburg High School continues to scoop up the honors. For a third time, it has received the “Business Department of the Year” award from the Business Teachers Association (BTA) of NYS and State Education Department. The award is based on development, impact and contribution to students in business and marketing education. Business teacher Krissy Lawrence (pictured in center) attended the state BTA conference in Syracuse to accept the award on behalf of her colleagues Diana Munich (left) and Sheila Sampson. Hamburg also received this honor in 2006 and 2009.
The Hamburg Business Department takes great pride in its Academy of Finance and the Finance Academy Advisory Board. The department was recently named a “Blue Star School” by Working in Support of Education (w!se) Financial Literacy for excellence in teaching financial literacy. Last spring, with the help of local insurance professionals, Mrs. Sampson’s students won 15% of national scholarships awarded by Project iNVEST, an insurance education program. Mrs. Lawrence recently presented at two conferences on financial education as a Take Charge Today National Master Educator.
The department continues to expand its offerings and has recently been approved to offer a Career and Technical Educational (CTE) endorsement for Regents Diplomas by the State Education Department. This endorsement certifies that students have the entry-level skills that employers indicate are essential for today’s workplace. Students in the Academy of Finance who successfully completed the academy and one additional business elective are eligible for an Advanced Regents Diploma.-- Oct. 22, 2015
